Prana

Graphite & Chalk on Toned Paper | 2021

Wood & Gold Ink

24x36

This piece was originally done for a cannabis themed art show.

The idea came together over the course of a few thumbnail sketches and I started to like the idea of a self-sustaining cycle. The head is blowing clouds that rain down and replenish the pond from which she blooms in the same way that your own cyclical breath can help replenish your mind, body, and soul.

The double helix and accompanying molecular forms reference the chemical nature of our physical reality, while the Buddhist symbolism points to the ethereal nature of our metaphysical reality. I call this piece Prana as a reminder to breathe. I admit there is some irony in that smoke is the opposite of fresh air, but I have also had incredibly mind-opening and therapeutic experiences from cannabis that served as more of a metaphorical deep breath & release.

Atoms, planets, flourishing plants, DNA, circular geometric patterns, and the eye of awareness are all elements that are both baked into the drawing itself and reflected in the design of the frame.

My mom’s friend bought this piece from me in 2019, but it took me another two years after that to get around to finishing the frame. I may have a problem with getting shit done. However I finally did and after I was finally ready to ship it off, I made her a card to accompany the piece and to let her know how much I appreciate the support, the love over the years and of course, her patience.

Thanks Rita!
